Introduction to GTM

Tag Management Systems are really developed to help solve tracking challenges. So not only will it help you to get greater visibility into what exactly is going on in terms of the Welcome page, right, what button they’re clicking on, how much time they’re spending on there, it will help you to get greater visibility as to the actual specific behaviors that are happening on a particular page.

You can use tag manager for every other test except the split testing script.

The UA in google analytics is the container in GTM.

WordPress, you can go into your editor and you can edit the theme files themselves. Again, only if you’re comfortable doing this. I’m just going to show you kind of where this might be. So in this case, the theme, Header. This header PHP script. And then, you can see, there’s my head right here, that I’ve got set up in this little head style. So, I could basically just copy and paste this code here. Take this, and then, pop that into the head itself.

Tag is a piece of script technically that’s pushed on the page by tag manager through tag manager. So, instead of you doing it and copying, and pasting on the pages, you’re basically letting the tag manager do it for you as you’re standing as your proxy. But at the end of the day tag is really just here’s what I want you to do.Don’t get caught up in the script or anything like thatat this point. Here’s what I want you to do,that’s what a tag is.The different types of tags, there’s two big ones. There’s the built in tagsand then there are the custom HTML tags.So if there’s not a built in one that you’ve gotwith the vendor that you’re working on,you could use the custom HTML option

o, that’s why you would take a non-optimization platform, like a split testing script, like VWO or Optimizely, and you would put it outside of Tag Manager. You would not use it to fire Tag Manager. But instead, you put it above as high as you canin the head, and then, you put in the Tag Manager script. So, that’s kind of really the only — I shouldn’t say the only, but it is the biggest, biggest exception to what really you can’tuse Tag Manager for, and that is split testing scripts. So when it comes to kind of like, what can I use Tag Manager for,and what I can’t use Tag Manager for, really, just about everythingprobably could be put through Tag Manager.Again, there are going to be some exceptions, pretty rare. One of the major exceptions, really,is split testing scripts. You wouldn’t want to use it for that. Now, let’s talk about installing Google Tag Manager. So, we’re going to go ahead and swap right into Google. And I’m going to show you, number one, where do you find this?Of course, you could just Google,Google Tag Manager, it’ll pop up.I like, and you will as well, just going to tagmanager.google.com,which we’re going to do there. So, tagmanager.google.com you willneed to sign in to your account. You have to have a Google account. But if you’re watching this, you most likely do.It’s the same account that you will have access to,with your Google Analytics.Just use the same one, keeps it nice and easy. What I’m going to do — Now, yours may be different. This is an account that’s alreadygot a little bit of activity behind it,our Demo account here. So, you will see things like this, where you got all the different accountand what they call the containersin Google Tag Manager world.Or you may see something, if you’re just starting out, that looks like this, which is okay.Let’s get something set up.So, we’re going to actually going to start here. And I’m going to set this one up.This is going to be our Demo account. So, we’ve got a little site that’s all built up here,at Measurement Marketing, Ohio, for our demo. And this will be for the CXL Institute. All right, so then, we are in the US.We’re going to click on Continue. And then, there’s the container. So now, the way you think about this, the container is very similarto the property in Google Analytics, where in Google Analytics, you have that little UA number. And that’s your property ID for Google Analytics. In Google Tag Manager world, they call it a container. And the container contains all of your tags, your triggers, and your variables, which we’ll talk about in the next lessonas we go through here. But the container contains all of those things. It’s kind of your set up.It’s the bucket that holds all of this information. And the way that we like to think about the containeris typically per website. So if you have a bunch of different websites, then you might want to set up a bunchof different containers, one for each one.If you have a couple of different websites, but really, they are being treated as the same website, then you might just use one container. So in our case, we have MeasurementMarketing.io.And then, when you click through and your purchasevarious products or services that we offer, you go to Infusionsoft order forms. They’re actually on Infusionsoft.app, as a domain.Well, the Infusionsoft.app and the MeasurementMarketing.io,for us are really the same container. We keep them under the same containerbecause they’re treated the same. For us, even though they’re technically different domains, they are essentially being treatedas if they were the same domain. So, that’s what we did here. And so, we’re going to do this. We’re going to say this is the Demo Account.I’m going to call it that.
